Visiting Vienna’s Illusion Museum sounds like a fantastic idea! So we did. May 1 is a public holiday but most museums and restaurants are open, so we asked friends to go out for a trip for the day.
Illusion museums, also known as optical illusion museums or 3D art museums, are interactive art spaces that use various techniques to create optical illusions and trick the viewer’s perception. These museums often feature immersive and interactive exhibits where visitors can become part of the artwork, creating unique photo opportunities and memorable experiences.
If you’re planning to visit Vienna’s Illusion Museum, here are a few things you can expect:
Table of Contents
Interactive exhibits
The museum has a range of interactive exhibits that engage your senses and challenge your perception. You might encounter 3D artworks, optical illusions, mirror mazes, holograms, and more. One popular type of exhibit found in illusion museums is the 3D artwork, which uses clever perspective and shading techniques to create the illusion of depth when viewed from a certain angle. Visitors can pose and interact with these artworks, creating the illusion that they are part of the scene. (We unfortunately do not have photos of the mirror room.)
Mind-bending experiences
Prepare to have your mind blown! The museum will likely feature installations and experiences that play with your perception, creating illusions of depth, movement, or even altered realities. Mirror mazes, infinity rooms, and other mind-bending installations are also often found in illusion museums. These exhibits challenge your senses and perception, making you question what is real and what is an illusion. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take fun and creative photos.
A type of exhibit commonly found in illusion museums is the Ames room, which is a distorted room that plays with the viewer’s perception of size and perspective. When viewed from a specific angle, the room creates an optical illusion where people can appear to change in size or swap places. (see foremost photo and photo gallery)
Educational elements
While the focus is on entertainment, illusion museums often incorporate educational aspects. You might learn about the science behind optical illusions, the psychology of perception, or the history of famous illusions and artists who have explored these concepts.
Puzzles
There are regular puzzles and other advanced puzzles that kids can solve. Those are for sale too, so make sure to pick one as a souvenir before you go.
Engaging for all ages
Illusion museums are usually designed to cater to visitors of all ages. Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or even on your own, there will be exhibits and activities that will captivate everyone’s attention and spark curiosity.
Overall, illusion museums offer a unique and entertaining way to engage with art and explore the limits of human perception. They are particularly popular among those who enjoy interactive experiences, photography enthusiasts, and families looking for an exciting outing.

To make the most of your visit, consider checking the museum’s website or contacting them in advance for information about opening hours, ticket prices, and any specific guidelines or requirements. It’s also a good idea to plan enough time to fully explore the exhibits and have fun experimenting with the illusions.

We then walked a little into the city center and chanced upon one of our favorite gelato salon. We would get some whenever we get to pass by this area especially on Sundays. The kids each have a cone of their favorite flavors.

And as we still have some time to spend before our scheduled grill time out with other friends, we also visited the Neko café.
The Neko café is the very first cat cafe outside of Asia, which is owned by a Japanese lady who rescued some of the resident cats. While we already have three cats of our own for a year now, we still enjoy visiting these 5 precious cats we’ve came to know while having matcha latte, cake, and teas.
The cats were particularly friendly that day, much to the kids delight. Playing with catch toys, getting nearer to have pets, and even smelling them. (Cats know who to trust hehe.)
If you plan to visit the café, make sure to read the website’s or menu’s do’s and don’ts.
