Banda Kawayan Pilipinas, the world-renowned bamboo orchestra from the Philippines, once again showcased the beauty and ingenuity of Filipino artistry as they enchanted international audiences with a spellbinding performance at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. Their concert, aptly titled “Taginting”, a Filipino word that evokes the resonant, ringing sound of bamboo, brought the very soul of Philippine music to life in a breathtaking celebration of rhythm, culture, and innovation.
From the very first note, the ensemble captured the audience’s hearts. With instruments lovingly handcrafted from bamboo, each member displayed not only technical mastery but also a deep connection to Filipino tradition. The group’s artistry lay in their ability to fuse cultural heritage with contemporary creativity, transforming humble bamboo into a world-class symphonic medium.
The performance opened with the beloved folk song “Leron Leron Sinta”, instantly stirring smiles and nostalgia among Filipino and foreign guests alike. What followed was an exhilarating musical journey that spanned genres and generations. The group’s repertoire seamlessly intertwined classic Filipino melodies with global musical favorites, creating a soundscape that was both familiar and refreshingly new. Audiences delighted in a dynamic medley featuring tunes such as “Do-Re-Mi,” “Conga,” “Wooden Heart,” “Axel Foley,” and the ever-spirited “La Cucaracha.”
For their grand finale, Banda Kawayan delivered a spectacular rendition of Johann Strauss Sr.’s “Radetzky March”, infusing the classical masterpiece with vibrant Filipino rhythm. The audience responded with thunderous applause, rising to their feet in appreciation of the orchestra’s infectious energy and flawless performance.
True to their name and cultural mission, Banda Kawayan Pilipinas reaffirmed that Filipino creativity knows no bounds. Their innovative use of traditional bamboo instruments — from the angklung and katingtingan to the bumbong and kalatok — demonstrated how indigenous craftsmanship can harmonize beautifully with modern compositions. Even contemporary arrangements such as “APT” were given a distinct Filipino twist, leaving audiences amazed at how bamboo could so effortlessly transcend musical boundaries.

The evening was more than a concert, it was a joyful cultural exchange. Guests were invited to experience the magic of bamboo firsthand by trying out the instruments themselves. One of the most memorable moments came during an impromptu Tinikling session, where brave volunteers stepped, and leapt between clapping bamboo poles in the Philippines’ most iconic folk dance. The crowd erupted in laughter and cheers as none other than Philippine Consul General Zoilo Velasco joined in, impressing everyone with his lively rhythm and infectious enthusiasm.
The group’s triumph in Vienna was only one of several recent milestones. Banda Kawayan Pilipinas proudly represented the Philippines at the 14th International Youth Music Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia, where they earned both the Gold Award and the festival’s most prestigious honor, the Grand Prix title. This recognition solidified their status as one of the world’s premier youth orchestras and a shining symbol of Filipino excellence in music.
Through their performances, Banda Kawayan Pilipinas continues to prove that music…much like bamboo is resilient, versatile, and deeply rooted in the earth. With every resonant note, they carry the rhythm of the Philippines across borders, connecting cultures through the universal language of sound.
