The Vienna Atelier of Traditional Art (VATA) is hosting its annual End-of-Year Exhibition from November 30 to December 6, 2024, at its location on Hütteldorferstraße 128 in Vienna. The event opened with a vernissage on November 30, from 6 to 9 PM. This exhibition celebrates the work of VATA’s artists and students, showcasing a variety of traditional and academic art techniques cultivated throughout the year.
The Vienna Atelier of Traditional Art (VATA), co-founded by Andy Nabong, is a prominent art studio in Vienna, focused on classical and traditional art techniques. Nabong, a classically trained artist, draws inspiration from old masters like Velázquez, Caravaggio, and Rembrandt. His formal education includes studies at the Art Students League and Grand Central Academy in New York, the Academy of Realist Art in Canada, and an internship at the Russian Imperial Academy of Arts.
Nabong teaches workshops and classes covering various topics, such as flower painting, animal painting, and drawing fundamentals. These courses emphasize traditional techniques, including sight-size methods and alla prima painting.
Nabong, being a central figure at VATA, is recognized for his workshops on academic techniques and his evocative portrayals of natural and figurative subjects. His artworks displayed at the atelier emphasize precision and emotional resonance, aligning with the atelier’s focus on classical art traditions.
For Nabong, teaching art is a fulfilling endeavor, “It’s a wonderful feeling that I can give them confidence through their art,” he said. “But it’s important that when one studies with me – that they keep their own identity, I do not aim to change theirs so that their art is distinct,” Nabong added.
Art initially served as a creative refuge for Andy Nabong while he worked in the demanding field of healthcare in New York City. After taking early retirement, he embraced his passion for art more fully, transitioning into a new chapter of life focused on creativity and teaching. This decision also marked the end of years spent balancing his time between the bustling streets of the Big Apple and the cultural richness of Vienna, where he ultimately decided to settle and establish himself as an artist and instructor.
Another Filipino artist showcasing her works is Lisa Ante-Pangan. Pangan brings a blend of Filipino and Austrian cultural influences to her art. Known for her innovative use of coffee as a medium, Pangan creates pieces that explore themes of diaspora, memory, and identity. Her works, such as those inspired by Philippine beaches and her other series, add a distinctive, multicultural dimension to the exhibition.
Pangan’s other favorite is gouache, her techniques using this medium highlight her meticulous attention to detail and dynamic composition. She often focuses on themes like resilience and identity, using the medium’s versatility to layer vibrant pigments and achieve depth. This approach lends her work a timeless quality, resonating with themes of cultural duality and the blending of traditional and contemporary artistic practices.
