The Turm Restaurant is a unique dining establishment at Vienna’s Donauinsel. Situated at a height of 170 meters, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Restaurants, located at significant heights, such as the Turm Restaurant, often provide a memorable dining experience with stunning vistas.
A highschool teacher of mine was visiting Vienna, she also happened to be my dad’s highschool classmate. Needless to say, I invited her for lunch – it’s been more than 20 years since we last saw each other, and she still looks as young as she did back then. We went with her sister-in-law who has also become an aunt to me, and their niece who happens to be my older brother’s batchmate in grade school. It was a lovely reunion of sorts.
There are actually two restaurants at the Danube Tower, the one at 170 meters and another at 160 meters, which is more like a café and bar called the Danube Café (Panorama). Same as the higher restaurant, it provides visitors with a unique dining experience in an extraordinary setting. It offers views of the cityscape, including landmarks like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Vienna Woods, and the vast expanse of the Danube River.
Panoramic Views
As mentioned above, the main highlight of the restaurant is the breathtaking panoramic views of Vienna. As the restaurant slowly rotates, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a 360-degree view of the city, including iconic landmarks, the River Danube, and the surrounding landscape.
The ceiling has markers pointing to particular areas so you know what part of Vienna you are looking at. See from our previous post here.
Culinary Experience
The revolving restaurant offers a diverse menu with a focus on Austrian and international cuisine. You can expect a range of dishes, including both traditional and contemporary options. The restaurant also feature seasonal specialties and a selection of fine wines.
We had their soup of herb pancake stripes in root vegetables and chive, and we also tried some of the main dishes like the Styrian Supreme Chicken served with kohlrabi, green beans, potatoes cooked in chicken brew, marjoram, and belly bacon. One of us had the dry-aged beef back – BBQ short rib which was tender and juicy, it was served with mashed potato and crunchy onions.
Elegant Atmosphere
The restaurant aims to provide an upscale and elegant dining experience. The interior design is stylish, with comfortable seating arrangements that allow guests to enjoy the views while dining. The ambiance is refined, creating a pleasant atmosphere for a special meal or celebration.
Reservations and Dress Code
Due to its popularity and limited seating capacity, it’s recommended to make reservations in advance, especially during peak hours or on weekends. The restaurant doesn’t employ a dress code, but it’s always good to look your best.
Observation Deck
In addition to the revolving restaurant, the Danube Tower also has an observation deck that offers stunning panoramic views of Vienna. Visitors can access the observation deck separately from the restaurant if they wish to enjoy the views without dining.
When visiting the Danube Tower and its restaurant or café, you can expect to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Vienna and its surroundings. Here are some of the notable sights you can see from the tower:
Danube River
As the name suggests, the Danube Tower offers unparalleled views of the majestic Danube River, which is Europe’s second-longest river. You can admire the meandering flow of the river as it winds through the city and observe the boats and ships sailing along its waters.
Vienna Cityscape
The tower provides a bird’s-eye view of Vienna’s iconic cityscape. You can marvel at the beautiful architecture of the historic city center, spot prominent landmarks such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its distinctive spire, the Vienna State Opera, and the Hofburg Palace.
Vienna Woods (Wienerwald)
Looking beyond the city, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Vienna Woods. This extensive forested area offers a lush and green backdrop, creating a picturesque contrast to the urban landscape.

Prater Park
Located nearby, you can catch glimpses of the famous Prater Park from the tower. This expansive park is home to the iconic Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel and offers recreational spaces, including walking trails and meadows.
Mountains in the Distance
On clear days, you may even be able to see the distant Alpine mountain range from the tower. The snow-capped peaks add a touch of natural grandeur to the panoramic views.
Sunset and Nighttime Views
The Danube Tower is a particularly popular spot to witness stunning sunsets. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky lights up with vibrant hues, casting a magical glow over the city. In the evening, you can also enjoy the sparkling city lights that adorn Vienna’s skyline.
After a lot of stories from the past and some catching up, some drinks and a full meal we went up the deck to view Vienna a little more. It was windy, being winter but bearable, we then rode the elevator down, got some souvenirs, walked back and took photos on the way. I hope they did enjoy the experience!
