Stepping into Vienna’s Barista Cats was like walking into a cozy little haven where all my cat-lover dreams came true. The moment I opened the door, I was greeted by the gentle hum of soft music, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and the sight of cats lounging and napping all around the café. It felt like I’d entered some kind of feline paradise.
It was a long overdue visit, I had wanted to drop by at the first mention of them opening last year, also because the other Neko café we’re used to visiting was closing at that time.. It just didn’t happen until we accidentally passed by on our way to an event (a watercolor painting demonstration) in the area.
The first thing I noticed was how peaceful it was – as most cat cafés we’ve been to. The cat area is separate from the food display area, and a second door is there for the cats’ safety. The cats were all relaxed and moved about with an effortless grace, weaving in and out of tables, curling up in sunny cat tower spots by the windows, or stretching lazily on plush cushions. I could already tell this was going to be one of those places where I’d lose track of time, simply enjoying the presence of these beautiful creatures.
Menu
As per the usual, this cat café serves a variety of light refreshments, both food and beverages, that are easy to enjoy while spending time with the cats. Here’s a list of some of their items you can enjoy:
Coffee and Espresso Drinks
A range of coffee beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos (or catuccino), and handful Viennese specialty coffees like melange. Often made with high-quality beans to provide a comforting, warm drink that pairs well with the relaxing atmosphere, they also come as iced versions.
Herbal Teas and Infusions
A selection of herbal teas – which comes as a fusion of flavors including lemon, mint, and black currant, or rooibos and passionfruit which offers a calming experience that complements the soothing environment of the café.
Specialty Cold Drinks
Homemade iced teas are also served along with other non-alcoholic drinks, lemonades, colas, and fruit-infused waters are popular for those who prefer something cool and refreshing.
Pastries and Baked Goods
Freshly baked croissants, cookies, and cakes displayed in a glass case, these treats are usually easy to eat with one hand while the other is free for petting cats.
Hot Meals
Soups and hot meals are offered on certain days (desserts are available all day) which are simple meals (tagged as bio) – Vegetable Soup with cat noodles, Bio Bean Stew with Sweet Potatoes, Bio Red Lentil Curry to name some.
Vegan and Gluten-Free Options
This cat café offer vegan and gluten-free alternatives, such as a mixed plate vegan (hummus, falafel, olives, pickled vegetables, bread) to cater to a wider range of dietary preferences.
Cat (House) Rules
As most cat cafés, visitors are requested to observe the rules of the resident cats.
1. Kids should be accompanied by an adult.
2. Do not pull/hold cats by the tail.
3. Do not pick up or hold the cats.
4. Do not feed the cats.
Cozy
After ordering catuccinos, croissant, and a slice of cake for hubby and myself —because what’s a cozy afternoon without a sweet treat?—I found a seat near the window where a fluffy black cat was curled up. As I sat down, it opened its one eye (I assumed it’s a rescue), gave me a quick look of approval, and then went back to nap. I took it as a good sign. There’s something so comforting about being in a place where cats feel at home, like you’ve been invited into their world rather than the other way around.
As I sipped my coffee, a sleek black cat with the most mesmerizing eyes strolled over and jumped onto the seat next to me. I couldn’t resist reaching out to give him a gentle scratch behind the ears. It leaned into my hand, purring softly, and I could feel the stress of the day melting away. It was such a simple thing, but it brought me so much joy.
As respectful visitors of the cats, we were observing them and making sure not to disturb their haven. It was obvious that the café was a labor of love, not just for the staff but for the cats too. They were all so well cared for, and their relaxed nature made the atmosphere even more special.
As we spent the afternoon there, we watched other customers interact with the cats—some playing with the toys scattered around, others quietly reading with a purring companion on their side. It was the kind of place where you could be completely yourself, surrounded by people who share a love for cats and a desire for a little peace and quiet.
Before I knew it, hours had passed. we’d finished our coffees and cakes, taken a few photos of the cats.
We talked about our own pets at home with one of the staff, exchanged stories, and laughed (discreetly) at the antics of the cats as they played together.
So we knew we’d be back. There was something special about that café—something that made it more than just a place to grab a coffee. It was a sanctuary, a little slice of heaven in the middle of Vienna, where cats and people could find a moment of connection and calm. I walked out with a smile on my face, feeling lighter, happier, and already looking forward to my next visit.
