Aida is a well-known chain of coffeehouses and pastry shops in Vienna, more technically defined as an espresso bar and pastry shop. Founded in 1913, Aida has become an integral part of Vienna’s coffeehouse culture and is recognized for its classic Viennese charm and delicious assortment of pastries and coffee drinks. Aida is the first coffeehouse to use an espresso machine in the whole of Austria, in 1946 at its Wollzeile, Stubentor branch.
The chain celebrated its 110th year anniversary this year and now has 34 branches all over Vienna.
Vienna’s Coffeehouse Tradition
Aida preserves Vienna’s rich coffeehouse tradition, offering a glimpse into the city’s historic café culture. Although it is different from other traditional Viennese coffeehouses with its bright interiors and mostly pink decor, Aida is still an iconic coffee culture pioneer. Stepping into an Aida restaurant is like taking a trip back in time, with its elegant interiors, marble-topped tables, and Art Nouveau-style decor. The ambiance is inviting, making it an excellent place to relax, catch up with friends, or enjoy some quiet time with a good book.
Pastries and Confections
Aida is renowned for its delectable array of pastries and confections. From classic Viennese treats like Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel to colorful macarons, cakes, and pralines, there is something to satisfy every sweet craving. The pastries are freshly baked, and the quality of ingredients used reflects the time-honored recipes that have been cherished for generations.

Punschkrapfen: Punschkrapfen is a traditional Austrian pastry made of a sponge cake soaked in rum or punch syrup and layered with apricot jam and a pink, rum-flavored icing. It is often adorned with a chocolate glaze drizzle.
Mozartkugeln: While not a pastry in the traditional sense, Mozartkugeln is a famous confection offered by Aida. These small, round chocolates are filled with marzipan, nougat, and pistachio, paying homage to the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Kardinalschnitte: Kardinalschnitte, or Cardinal’s Slice, is a light and fluffy sponge cake layered with whipped cream and apricot jam. It is often dusted with powdered sugar and is a delightful treat for those who prefer a less dense pastry.
Various Petit Fours and Macarons: Aida also offers an assortment of smaller pastries, including colorful macarons and petit fours, which are perfect for those who want to sample a variety of flavors in smaller portions.
Coffee Selection
Coffee is an essential part of the Aida experience. The coffee menu features a variety of classic Viennese coffee drinks, including Melange, Einspänner, and Kleiner Brauner. Aida takes pride in using premium coffee beans and expert baristas, ensuring that every cup of coffee is a delight.
Melange: The Melange is similar to a cappuccino but with a slightly different ratio of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. It is a smooth and creamy coffee drink with a rich flavor.
Einspänner (coffee with whipped cream): An Einspänner is a classic Viennese coffee made with strong black coffee topped with a dollop of whipped cream. It is typically served in a glass with a handle, making it a delightful treat for coffee enthusiasts.
Kleiner Schwarzer (Small Black Coffee): The Kleiner Schwarzer is a simple black coffee, similar to an espresso, served in a small cup without any milk or cream.
Großer Schwarzer (Large Black Coffee): The Großer Schwarzer is the same as the Kleiner Schwarzer but in a larger cup, offering a stronger and more extended coffee experience.
Großer Brauner (Large Brown Coffee): The Großer Brauner is a large black coffee served with a side pitcher of hot milk. Diners can add the desired amount of milk to their coffee, customizing the strength and creaminess of the drink.
Wiener Eiskaffee (Viennese Iced Coffee): The Wiener Eiskaffee is a refreshing coffee drink perfect for warmer days. It consists of black coffee poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream.
Pharisäer (Pharisee): While not always available on every coffeehouse menu, the Pharisäer is a special treat for those looking for a little indulgence. It is a mix of black coffee, rum, and sugar, topped with whipped cream.
Cappuccino and Latte Macchiato: Aida also typically offers more international favorites like cappuccino and latte macchiato, featuring espresso combined with steamed milk and milk foam.
