Sundays in Vienna are meant to be spent with family, regardless if going out of town, watching movie at home, playing at the park, eating out, or visiting a free museum (especially if it is the month’s first Sunday). Thus, shopping stores are closed as most grocery stores. In fact, only a handful are open, and you have to maybe travel a bit if you weren’t able to do your grocery shopping for the week. Also, not all items might be sold on Sundays.
Sure gas stations are open but they sell items a bit more expensive and there aren’t a lot of the food you need for cooking. For many years, Billa – Austria’s supermarket chain operating since 1953, was the only one with stores open on Sundays, and only 2 at that (4 including the ones at the Airport). In recent years, Interspar (and Spar) introduced smaller stores/kiosks that sell only food and drinks. They are open on Sundays to accommodate tourists as well as hospital guests, as most of them shops can be found at train stations and hospital premises.
Generally, restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops are open on Sundays to cater to tourists, particularly at the first district. Pharmacies are assigned (Nachtapotheken and Apothekendienst) to open for services alternately, 3 branches at most are open in each district.
During the pandemic, grocery delivery services within the day (as fast as 15 minutes) brought relief to most of us, especially since we can avail of such on Sundays too. Here’s an unofficial list of both grocery and food delivers services in Vienna.
Now, in case you run out of eggs and have everything else at home, head to any of these shops where you can buy groceries on Sundays, just choose the one nearest you.
Note: not all listed will be open on holidays.
