Kultur Bayanihan Österreich (KUBÖ) – now on its third year, can be said is a community initiative in Austria, focused on promoting and preserving Filipino culture, values, and traditions. The word “Bayanihan“ comes from the Filipino tradition of communal unity and cooperation, where neighbors help each other without expecting anything in return. “Kultur“ is the German word for culture, reflecting the blending of Filipino and Austrian contexts.
KUBÖ is an initiative organized by SENTRO – Sentro ng Kultura at Wika ng Austria at Pilipinas (Center of Filipino and Austrian culture and language), aiming to create a space for cultural exchange, community engagement, and the promotion of Filipino heritage in Vienna. This project is made possible through the support of several key partners, including the Cultural Department MA7, VHS Kulturgarage, and Wien 3420 Aspern Development AG of the City of Vienna. Their contributions have been instrumental in bringing this project to life, providing resources and venues that enable the Filipino community to celebrate and share their rich traditions, arts, and history with a wider audience.
The group and people behind KUBÖ organizes an annual cultural event/social gathering, and learning programs to strengthen the Filipino community in Austria (and neighboring countries) and share their heritage with others especially to the younger members. It also focuses on building bridges between Filipino migrants and those interested, supporting integration while keeping cultural identity strong.
KUBÖ plays an important role in bringing solidarity among Filipinos living in Austria and neighboring countries, offering a platform for mutual support and cultural exchange.
While this year’s event were compressed to only two days (September 7-8), it was still a fun-filled, knowledge and value-laden convention.

Creating Legacy
“Creating Legacy” was the overall theme of KUBÖ throughout. It reflects the Filipino diaspora’s dedication to leaving a lasting, positive impact both in their host country and back home in the Philippines. This theme touches on several key issues and values that are central to the Filipino community, encouraging the continuation of traditions and practices that benefit future generations.
Art Exhibit
An art exhibit with the theme “Creating Legacy” organized by the group sige! in collaboration with KUBÖ, offered a platform for Filipino artists to express the enduring impact of migration on culture, identity, and community. This theme draws from the collective experiences of Filipino migrants, showcasing their stories, struggles, and contributions through art that reflects both their personal journeys and shared history.
The theme “Creating Legacy” centers on how migration shaped the legacy of individuals, families, and entire communities. Filipino migration, particularly to Austria, has long been motivated by the pursuit of better opportunities, education, and livelihood, while at the same time presenting challenges of displacement, identity, and cultural preservation.
The art exhibit featured works that delve into the following aspects of migration:
- Cultural Heritage: How do Filipino migrants preserve their culture while integrating into new environments? This was depicted through art that emphasizes traditional practices, rituals, and symbols carried over from the Philippines to Austria. For example, visual representations of “bayanihan” (communal unity), the Heritage house of Ilocos, stilt house of the Badjaos, folklore characters, religious images, or weaving as a Filipino tradition highlight how Filipinos maintain connections with their homeland.
- Personal and Collective Memory: Art that reflects the stories of migrant workers, both their personal triumphs and challenges, would be a critical part of this exhibit. Themes of homesickness, the constant desire to return, bringing Filipino art to foreign audiences and the sacrifice of leaving loved ones behind while caring for others was represented through photography and painting.
- The Dual Identity of Filipino Migrants: The exhibit also focused on the complexity of identity—how Filipino migrants navigate between their Filipino roots and their adopted Austrian culture. As the very first Filipinos who arrived in Vienna were nurses, it demonstrates the fluid nature of identity, where the migrant is constantly moving between two worlds, the love one holds for his/her roots and that of the adopted homeland.

Art as a Reflection of Legacy
The art exhibit focused on how the Filipino migrant community is creating a legacy that transcends geographical boundaries as well as our own history and icons. The notion of legacy here takes on many forms:
- Legacy for Future Generations: The exhibit emphasized how Filipino migrants are ensuring that their children, who are growing up in Austria, maintain strong ties to their Filipino heritage. This was portrayed through art that highlights intergenerational relationships, the passing down of traditions, and the evolving nature of Filipino culture in the diaspora.
- Legacy for the Host Community: Filipino migrants contribute not only to their homeland but also to their host countries. The art explored how the Filipino presence has influenced Austrian society—whether through food, music, art, or values. This portion of the exhibit focused on themes of integration and cross-cultural exchange, showing how migrants enrich the societies they join.
-
Legacy for the Homeland: For many Filipino migrants, creating a legacy means contributing to the development of the Philippines, whether through remittances, charitable initiatives, or the sharing of knowledge and skills. The art in this context could evoke the migrant’s connection to the Philippines, visually representing their enduring sense of responsibility to support those they’ve left behind.

Filipino Feast
If you know a Filipino, or is friends with one, you’ll know that food plays a big role in the community. Filipinos celebrate feasts and food with vibrant, community-centered gatherings that showcase the rich cultural heritage, deep sense of hospitality, and love for…of course, food.
Traditional Filipino Cuisine
Some of the common dishes you will find in a gathering (which we also had at KUBÖ) include:
1. Lechon (Roasted Pig)
- Lechon is the star of most Filipino feasts. It’s a whole pig roasted over a charcoal fire until the skin is crispy and the meat is tender. It’s often served with liver sauce or a vinegar-based dip.
2. Pancit
- Pancit Canton or Pancit Bihon are noodle dishes – stir-fried with vegetables, shrimp, pork, or chicken, and is a favorite of many Filipinos.
3. Kare-Kare
- A peanut-based stew made with oxtail, tripe, and vegetables. It is often served with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) to enhance the flavor.
4. Lumpiang Shanghai
- These are Filipino-style spring rolls filled with ground pork, shrimp, and vegetables. They’re deep-fried to crispy perfection and served with sweet and sour sauce.
5.Caldereta
- A rich tomato-based stew often made with beef, though goat (kalderetang kambing) is also common. It includes potatoes, carrots, olives, and bell peppers.
6.Inihaw (Grilled Dishes/Barbecue)
- Grilled meats like Inihaw na Baboy (grilled pork) and Inihaw na Manok (grilled chicken) are commonly featured. Inihaw na Liempo (grilled pork belly) is also a favorite as well as barbecues on stick.
Kamayan
KUBÖ guests also experienced the unique and traditional Filipino dining style known as Kamayan. “Kamayan” translates to “eating with hands” in Filipino, and it’s a communal feast where diners enjoy a spread of food laid out on banana leaves, with no utensils required. This style of eating emphasizes the importance of togetherness, family, and the shared experience of savoring delicious food. Kamayan feasts typically feature an assortment of grilled meats, seafood, rice, fresh fruits, and various dips and sauces, all designed to be enjoyed in a relaxed and festive manner.
A special thanks to Lorelei’s Pan, Ate Sonia’s Kitchen, and Glenda’s Lechon for thoughtfully preparing this Kamayan experience. Their expertise and dedication in crafting these flavorful dishes made the feast both authentic and memorable, showcasing the best of Filipino hospitality and cuisine.
Filipino Food Businesses
For many of us, we were able to take home our Filipino favorite breakfast staples like Bangus belly, longganisa, tocino, corned beef and canned sardines thanks to Pinoy Kitchen. Pinoy Kitchen is a business focused on bringing authentic Filipino flavors to Europe, providing a variety of high-quality Filipino food products. Established in 2019, the company caters to the Filipino community and those curious about Filipino cuisine by offering products mentioned above, and other delicacies. Their mission is to connect people with the rich culinary heritage of the Philippines while using premium ingredients to maintain authenticity.
In addition to traditional frozen meats, Pinoy Kitchen offers Filipino snacks, ice cream, and ingredients that make it easier for Filipinos in Europe to recreate dishes from home. The company has expanded its offerings to cater to a growing interest in Filipino food among non-Filipinos as well.
Their products serve as a cultural bridge, promoting appreciation for the diverse flavors of Filipino cuisine.
Performances
It was truly wonderful to witness the talented kids who graduated from the SENTRO summer camp showcase their skills and cultural pride through a series of vibrant performances. They gracefully performed tinikling, the traditional Filipino dance characterized by intricate footwork and rhythmic bamboo clapping. Watching them move in harmony, hopping in and out of the clashing bamboos, felt like witnessing a beautiful blend of cultural preservation and youthful exuberance.
The children’s rendition of Mamang Sorbetero and Saranggola ni Pepe, beloved Filipino songs that resonate deeply with themes of childhood and nostalgia, was equally moving. Their clear voices sang of dreams, innocence, and the joys of flying a kite—invoking a sense of pride and connection to their Filipino roots that went beyond mere lyrics. As they sang together, it felt like a celebration of shared heritage and identity.
To top it off, the kids also demonstrated their prowess in arnis, the traditional Filipino martial art. With focused expressions and confident movements, they showcased a skill that not only represents physical strength but also embodies discipline, respect, and cultural pride. Watching them practice this ancient art form—one that has been passed down through generations—was a reminder of the resilience and strength embedded within Filipino culture.
Overall, Kultur Bayanihan Österreich’s “Creating Legacy” captures the Filipino spirit of resilience, cooperation, and forward-thinking. Whether through standing up for environmental rights, supporting families in the Philippines, or inspiring entrepreneurial success, the Filipino community in Austria is focused on building a lasting and meaningful legacy. These discussions, perfomances, exhibit, and exchangess remind Filipinos abroad that their actions today can shape the future for their families, communities, and the world at large. Through solidarity, support, and success, they contribute to a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.
