It’s supposed to be a sunny spring afternoon, but as April would have it…there was some rain, gray skies and quite cold winds for this time of the year. It does happen often in April, dubbed as the crazy-weather month that does what it likes in this part of Europe. The sky would have been perfect in blue, as a backdrop for the tulips that I, unfortunately, didn’t see much this season. But no weather so bad could stop foodie friends from seeing each other and bonding over food, right? Of course.
So off the wet streets I go, turning left then right, navigating the familiar streets I visit when I buy Japanese ingredients. Matcha Komachi, a rather small food shop that could barely seat 25 people but offers some of our favourite Korean and Japanese dishes heartily awaits.
Just about the right restaurant for people who likes anime and koreandramas! (Raising my hands here.) And am happy to share a meal here with fellow animelovers and koreandrama enthusiasts! 😉
The restaurant is small compared to some of the Vienna’s that offer sushi. Thing is, I prefer this small ones, as I know the chef takes his time making them dishes. Just like another of our favourites, a family-owned Japanese restaurant a few meters away from Matcha Komachi: Kuishimbo.
The first thing I had was the matcha komatchi set, it has butterfish, and eel sushis, avocado, and cucumber makis. I love eel, without hesitation so this dish, albeit looking scarce is alright.
A friend and I shared a bibimbap after. I’ve learned how to cook bibimbap recently and since it’s a very flexible dish, one can never go wrong. This one has fried tofu in it and it’s a welcome addition. The gochujang isn’t as spicy so it’s all good. Not a dish in their list that I would order repeatedly though.
This ebi-fry udon seems to be a recommended dish across different foodreview sites. I’m not a big fan of udon noodles so I passed, but tried a bit, broth goes well with the ingredients, and it was beautifully arranged, who would say no? Me, because I was full, tummy only got space for dessert by now.
For someone who likes matcha, this matcha latte with adzuki (red bean) ice cream is a must! Glad that I was dining in with fellow matcha lovers, too. Adzuki might be an acquired taste, but having my share of Japanese sweets through the years, makes me love it so. Being on matcha makes it all the more yummy. If for anything, one only wants a snack, this will do.
Matcha komachi also sells fine ceramic tea cup and bowl pieces.
If you are around town and wanting to have a quick but yummy meal, matcha komachi is where to go. Prices are good, servings are ample and the ambiance is friendly too. You can also have take outs of onigiris and other japanese snacks. 😉
