“Wars Belong in Museums” is often used to convey the idea that the lessons, artifacts, and memories of past wars should be preserved and presented in museum settings rather than being perpetuated or repeated through ongoing conflicts. Simply put, wars should be a thing of the past.
Vienna’s Military Museum, also known as the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum or Museum of Military History has had this motto ever since, and while I have visited often, I have never really featured it for the sadness that the atmosphere it emits. However, I am not advocating for the erasure of war from public discourse or historical awareness. Rather, I believe in the value of preserving the memory, knowledge, and artifacts of wars in dedicated spaces where they can be studied, remembered, and used to promote understanding, peace, and a better future. And hopefully this piece will do so.
